Is the AWS Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02) worth it? How hard it is

Updated · 6 min read

CLF-C02 (AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner) is the usual first AWS exam. Is it worth the time and the fee, and how hard is it? Here is an honest assessment, based on what AWS publishes and on how beginners usually find it.

The short verdict

CLF-C02 is worth it if you are new to AWS or the cloud and want a structured start, a recognised baseline, and a foundation for harder exams. It is less useful if you already work hands-on with AWS and want to be hired for a technical role, where an associate-level exam carries more weight.

Who it is worth it for

  • Career changers moving into cloud, who want a first credential and a clear study path.
  • Non-technical roles such as sales, marketing, project management, finance and support that work alongside cloud teams. AWS itself says the certification suits candidates from non-IT backgrounds.
  • Students and graduates who want to show initiative.
  • IT staff new to AWS who want a map of the platform before an associate exam.

Who can skip it

  • People with solid AWS experience, who can go straight to an associate exam.
  • Anyone taking it only to tick a box: check what the job or employer actually asks for first.

How hard is CLF-C02?

AWS describes the target candidate as having up to six months of exposure to AWS, and the exam guide lists coding, cloud architecture design, troubleshooting, implementation and load testing as out of scope. So you are asked what services are and when to use them, not to build anything. Still, expect these challenges:

  • It is broad. Four domains: Cloud Concepts (24%), Security and Compliance (30%), Cloud Technology and Services (34%) and Billing, Pricing, and Support (12%).
  • Some questions have more than one answer. Multiple response questions have two or more correct options out of five or more, and you must find them all.
  • Similar services. You need to separate S3 from EBS and EFS, CloudWatch from CloudTrail, and Reserved Instances from Savings Plans.
  • The pass mark is 700 on a scale of 100 to 1,000, with 65 questions in 90 minutes. There is no penalty for guessing, so answer everything.

A realistic plan for a beginner is two to four weeks at about an hour a day. Our CLF-C02 study guide sets out a two-week plan built on the AWS exam guide.

What you actually get from it

  • The vocabulary of AWS. Regions, Availability Zones, IAM, shared responsibility and pricing models appear in every later AWS conversation.
  • A foundation for the next exam. The associate-level exams assume you already know these ideas.
  • A signal, not a guarantee. It shows initiative and a baseline. It does not replace projects or experience, and employers weigh it differently.

Be careful with articles that quote exact salary rises or pass rates for this exam. Those numbers are rarely sourced, and they vary by country, role and employer. AWS lists the exam fee as 100 USD on its exam page; check the current fee for your country.

Make it count

  1. Study from AWS's official exam guide and training material.
  2. Test yourself with practice questions and read every explanation. The free CLF-C02 questions on ExamCup are a good place to start.
  3. Rehearse with a timed practice exam of 65 questions in 90 minutes before the real day.
  4. Plan the next step: see CLF-C02 vs SAA-C03 if you are heading for a technical role.

Frequently asked questions

Is the AWS Cloud Practitioner worth it?

For beginners and non-technical roles, usually yes: it is an inexpensive, well-defined way to learn the AWS basics and to show a recognised baseline. If you already build on AWS and are aiming at a technical job, an associate-level exam such as Solutions Architect Associate is worth more.

Is CLF-C02 hard?

It is the easiest of the AWS certification exams in level, because AWS designs it for people with up to six months of exposure and from non-IT backgrounds. It still covers a lot of services, and some questions have two correct answers, so it needs real preparation.

What is the CLF-C02 passing score?

AWS reports a scaled score from 100 to 1,000, and the minimum passing score is 700. The exam is compensatory: you need to pass overall, not every section.

How many questions are on the exam?

65 questions in 90 minutes. Fifty are scored and 15 are unscored questions used to test future content, and they are not identified.

Will it get me a job?

Not on its own. It can help with entry-level, support and sales roles around cloud teams. For technical roles, pair it with hands-on projects and a role-based or associate certification.

What should I take after CLF-C02?

Most people aiming at a technical role move on to Solutions Architect Associate. See our comparison of CLF-C02 and SAA-C03.
